The ancient world refers to those Western civilizations that flourished in the age before Christ. It is a term that covers many thousands of years and dozens of civilizations, great and small. One of the oldest, largest and best known is that of Egypt. Rediscovered by the modern world in the late eighteenth century, this mysterious culture gradually became less so as archaeologists uncovered and studied artifacts like the Rosetta stone (the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphic writing).
