In India, art has been intimately tied to religion for over 2,000 years. As the birthplace of three important religions, India has produced a sculptural legacy that embodies the beliefs of millions of the world's people. The most ancient religion is Hinduism, in which a single, ultimate reality - Brahman - is manifest in many forms or gods. Although Hinduism's roots go back to 2,500 B.C., its pantheon of deities were not widely personified in art until the fourth century A.D.

Hinduism is still India's dominant religion, but another of the world's major traditions originated and became popular here 2,000 years ago. Buddhism, founded by a prince named Siddhartha (and now known as the Buddha) offered its followers a path for overcoming the suffering that is life. Although today practiced only by a few in India, Buddhism spread throughout Asia where it was adapted and still flourishes.

Jainism, like Buddhism, was founded in the sixth century B.C. Although a minority religion in India, Jainism still has a strong following, especially among the wealthy. Other religions have found a home in India over the centuries as well: the country is vast, with a great range of cultures and climates and terrain. This diversity has provided fertile ground for a rich variety of artistic traditions.
