Besides portraying people and depicting places, artists also combine the two to create works that tell a story. Narrative art is used to communicate in many different ways, such as educating and conveying information, or recounting history and everyday events. It can also be used to promote ideas or opinions, as depicted in Endless Energy for Limitless Living, or for teaching a moral or religious lesson, as portrayed in The Last Days of the World According to the Prophets Joel and Daniel. Because paintings, and most other art forms, are static, they do not seem well suited to narration. However, artists have developed several approaches to telling a story with images. In some cases, they create a single image that focuses on a critical moment, as seen in the painting below, Judith with the Head of Holofernes. At other times, artists illustrate a sequence of events within a single work of art, as depicted in The Story of Judith and Holofernes.
