One of the striking things about this funerary jar is the fact that it has a base at the bottom that is made of straw which suggests that if that base was removed, it wouldn't stand up. Either it was unnecessary for it to stand up because it was in the ground, or it was unnecessary for it to stand up because it needed care. The cover has a base. The only way they can come out is to hold the vase in one's hand - it's for the living and the ashes of the dead. If someone empties out the contents, it must be held by hand. I hear this a lot now, that American kids are sent to see their grandmother or their grandfather so they get the feeling that they can live to be this old and everything does not have to be right now. Well this is the sense that you get from this piece.
