Purple bar

This rectangular work is seven feet tall and almost six feet across. It shows a greatly enlarged photograph of the Native American political activist Russell Means. The portrait has been tinted with various colors of paint, applied so heavily in some areas that thick streaks of it rise above the surface. The underlying photograph is visible beneath the paint, although alignment between the painted areas and the elements in the photo is imprecise. In some places, small black and white dots of the enlarged photo can be seen. The subject is shown from the chest up, with his head and right shoulder turned slightly toward the viewer. His black hair is tied in two long braids. His eyes are dark and his lips are closed. He is wearing a beaded neckband and ornamented shirt front. The background of the photograph is tinted bright turquoise blue. The man's shoulder is painted orange, and his chest is pink with pale blue highlights. His face is tinted reddish brown and his braided hair is covered in purple.
