Chavin Culture Northern Peru STIRRUP-SPOUT VESSEL, ca. 1220 - 1000 B.C. Terra-cotta Height 9 1/2 inches Museum purchase, 1973.23
|
This ceramic vessel has a dull gray surface with some signs of weathering. The vessel is comprised of three sections. First, it has a spherical container at its base. Second, a thick tube emerges from the container in two places to form an arch above it like a stirrup. Third, a vertical spout rises about two inches from the center of the stirrup. Decorating the container section is a thick raised line that curves upward like a question mark, then loops down upon itself and wraps around a raised round circle. On either side of this feature are short rows of small recessed dots. Beside these are wide grooves that extend diagonally from the top to the bottom of the container. The stirrup section is adorned with similar patterns in smaller form. The vertical spout is plain, except for a round lip protruding from its edge.
